Underwater Cameras an Extra Dimension to your Vacation

An underwater camera can obviously bring an extra dimension to any snorkelling or diving holiday, allowing you not only to witness the beauty of exotic subjects, such as coral, colourful fish, etc. beneath the sea, but to preserve it for posterity. However, underwater cameras are also used by marine biologists and oceanographers studying marine life forms, underwater features, such as coastal reefs and caves and the properties of the ocean itself. The market for underwater cameras is still fairly specialised, but their popularity in a sport, or leisure, context has grown over the last decade, or so.
Underwater Cameras
Water obviously has completely different properties from air and the deeper you go below the surface the less light and hence colour, there is and the greater the pressure of water on you and your camera equipment, becomes. Light degrades underwater, so the further light has to travel from your subject to your camera lens the greater the loss of clarity and colour. Underwater cameras are therefore typically equipped with a wide-angle lens, allowing you to get closer to your subject as well, of course, as allowing you to get more into your picture and often employ a powerful flash to compensate for the lack of natural colour underwater.
As far as depth is concerned, for general SCUBA diving, a pressure resistant camera casing, often made from polycarbonate, is required. For snorkelling, or shallow water photography, a splashproof camera casing may suffice, but do bear in mind that most of these are designed for watersports rather than underwater photography per se, so may not able to withstand the pressure of more than a few feet of water.
Manual control, over white balance, shutter speed, aperture, etc. can make the difference between an "ordinary" underwater photograph essentially ruined by a lack of colour, except for an overwhelming bluish or greenish hue, depending on the temperature of the water and one that is exceptional in every way. Brightness needs to be decreased the closer you are to the surface and perhaps by as much as 33% or 66% in bright, tropical waters, so exposure compensation is another useful feature to have in an underwater camera. Manual controls may seem complicated to the novice underwater photographer and, indeed, many underwater cameras at the lower end of the market do not offer them at all, but they are not difficult to master and, ultimately, highly rewarding.

Olympus produces a range of cameras suitable for underwater use, including the rugged SW series. The Olympus 1030 SW camera, for example, is a 10.1 megapixel model, waterproof to a depth of 33` without housing of any kind and capable of withstanding pressures of up to 220lbs. It is also shockproof, from heights up to 6`, or so, has a wide angle, 3.6x zoom lens and is capable of operation at up to IS01600. It is widely considered to be one of the best, all-round, underwater digital cameras, yet is still small and light enough it measures just 3.7" x 2.4" x 0.84" and weighs in at just 6.3oz to be carried in your trouser pocket.
If you are considering buying a digital camera or camcorder for underwater use, do bear in mind that underwater camcorders, per se, are more difficult to find than underwater cameras. Small underwater camcorders, which require no case, but are suitable for use only to a depth of 10`, or so, are available, but otherwise you`ll probably be looking for a flexible sealed housing for your camcorder, if you want to use it at depths of up to 30`, or so, or a hard, pressure resistant housing if you want to use it at greater depths.
Gifts For Techies
The best priced underwater digital cameras:

You're probably thinking that shopping for techie types (or gadget freaks, etc.) is something that involves a whole lot of technical knowledge about megapixels, megabytes, and other mega-whatzits out there. If you're not familiar with the latest developments in technology today, then it's totally understandable if you feel faint whenever you hear the words "digital". So how does that make you feel when you have to shop for someone who's into gadgets and tech toys? You could of course "give them a life" by getting them interested in a new hobby such as underwater photography so youcould buy them an underwater digital camera.
If you're into gadgets as well, then there's no problem shopping for tech toys for your fellow technophile. You probably already know about the latest products to come out from Silicon Valley and the rest of the world. It's a safe bet you also have a number of these technological marvels yourself. But for the "common" man, where does he go to buy the latest electronics as a present for someone special?

It's common knowledge for anyone who regularly browses the Internet that there are a lot of online shops specializing in products for those suffering from techno-lust. The problem is that most of these shops feature their products with descriptions that include a lot of technological mumbo-jumbo. Sometimes all a person needs to know is if a certain product shoots straight, or takes clear pictures, or can fly to the moon. Leave the pixels, LCDs, RAMs and ROMs to someone else! I just want to be sure that this camera doesn't screw up when I take pictures of myself skinny-dipping underwater in my neighbour's pool. Now where can I find a digital camera that can do that? And while you're at it, can you find me a gadget that can help me find the best fishing spot during my vacation?

A lot of websites sell these gadgets and more, but it's going to be frustrating going from one online shop to another. That's why I established my gift website, American Gift Shopping. I wanted to put up a one-stop gift shop that allows customers to find all the best gifts they could ever want, in just one place. Now you can shop for that underwater digital camera and that electronic fish finder in just one place!
But before you decide that this website only sells electronic products, think again. I've made sure that the website has all the gifts you'll ever want. So whether you're looking for a gift for Christmas, Valentine's Day, or just something for your friends or family members, you'll find everything you want right here. There are gifts for babies, for moms and dads, for teens, and for just about anybody!
Shopping for gifts online shouldn't be a hassle. And with a lot of online stores developing new and improved services everyday, a lot of people have discovered that it's pretty much more convenient to shop on the World Wide Web than it is to travel from one shopping mall to another. Let's face it, not all of us can find that perfect gift we're looking for at the first store we go to, right? It can get pretty tiresome really quick. Going to the Internet can save you a lot of time and money by offering you all the gifts you need at just one place.
Tips For Buying Underwater Digital Camera
Often it is not possible to capture the beauty of underwater life with normal camera, but thanks to underwater digital camera, now you can explore the marine life. An underwater camera is a special designed digital camera used for still and video photography to capture the amazing flora and fauna of marine life.
You can capture the still images of sea life or can shoot while scuba diving. Safely protected with waterproof casing, these digital cameras are designed to be fully submerged underwater and withstand any surrounding pressure. The smaller models of underwater cameras are normally ideal for up to two hundred feet to four hundred feet while the bigger digital cameras are made for deeper water regions.

As compared to film-based underwater cameras, the underwater digital cameras are much better since they don`t run out of film. Yon can also delete any bad shots or change to a lower resolution picture mode in low-light conditions. No more fuzzy backgrounds and edges as seen in film underwater cameras, with their wide-angle photography, underwater digital cameras delivers sharper images.
Available in all sizes, shapes and film format, many underwater digital cameras also come with viewfinder feature which helps in picture adjustment for photography. With some nice prints, the underground digital camera produces better images which are really helpful for amateur photographers.
However the underwater digital camera is not only meant for deep-sea divers. Many underwater digital cameras available today can also be used to take quality pictures on dry land in harsh climatic conditions like snowfall and severe rains. Adorned with multi-flash function, color correction filter and macro lens, the underwater digital camera offers superb image quality. Just like normal digital camera, this underwater digital camera also comes with 15MB of sufficient memory along with the storage, editing and manipulation software.
If you wonder which model of underwater digital camera to choose, what features to consider, then here is a briefly discussed guide on the features of some prominent underwater digital camera models.
This compact model is for those who want an easy-to-use and lightweight underwater digital camera. With 10x optical zoom and MPEG-2 format up to 10 Mbps, this is one of the best digital cameras available for video recording. However, with only 0.3MP 640x480 still imaging capability, the still imaging options are basically non-existent in this new model.
One of the pioneers in underwater digital camera market, the current Optio W30 comes with 7MP with ISO1600 and 3x optical zoom image recording feature. Supported by both SD and SDHC, Videos in this underwater digital camera is of 640x480 in MOV QuickTime MJPEG format.
This is the one of the best designed underwater digital cameras for up to 5feet depth of water. With 4GB card, and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 at 640x480 powers, the Xacti E1 allows shooting with an approximate record time of over 5 hours. For still images, this digital camera offers a solid 5x optical zoom with a 6MP CCD at up to ISO1600 power. One special key feature of this underwater digital camera is the flip out view screen which saves you from the risk of bumping in with underwater objects while swimming around.
At 10 Megapixels, ISO1600, and a 3.6x optical zoom feature, Olympus may also be one of the most well rounded underwater digital cameras. With an underwater depth up to 6.6 feet, this is the deepest water digital camera on the list.

Olympus Stylus 1030 Sw Review

Olympus has introduced another tough digital camera with its Stylus 1030SW. They claim it can handle a drop from 6.6 feet, a dunk in water 33 feet deep, temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and crushing weight of up to 220 pounds. The 10.1-megapixel 1030SW improves upon its predecessor, the 770SW, with increased shock absorption capabilities, more resolution, a slightly larger LCD screen, and a longer 3.6x optical zoom lens.
Sporting a sleek metal body in a choice of Starry Silver, Midnight Black or Metal Pink, waterproof line-up to everyone. Waterproof to 3m, shockproof to 1.5m, and freeze proof to -10 C, this camera is ready for the bumps and bangs of everyday life. In conjunction with its tough exterior, the [mju:] 850 SW boasts a hearty 8.0 Mega pixels to guarantee the flawless capture of every detail. Digital Image Stabilization is also on board to reduce blur. For framing flexibility, a 3x optical zoom (equivalent to 38-114mm on a 35mm camera) gets you in close, and the large 2.5 /6.4cm LCD makes it easy to quickly preview and review shots. In addition, an LED Macro Illuminator is available for enhancing shots of close-up subjects during macro photography.

Shooting outdoors in bright daylight can be tricky because of the extreme contrast between dark shadowed areas and bright sunlit areas. While the human eye is capable of detecting the nuances between dark and light and all the details in between, image sensors traditionally have not been quite as sensitive. The Stylus 1030 SW addresses this challenge head-on with Shadow Adjustment Technology, which compensates for extreme contrast where the shadow areas are underexposed and lack visible detail. With this technology, users can preview and capture images with the same contrast as the naked eye.
Finally, the camera s least impressive spec: it s freeze proof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Besides being a feat that most other cameras seem to handle just fine, handling a mere 14 degrees Fahrenheit is truly nothing to brag about anywhere north of the 45th parallel.
Although the 1030 SW has not yet been introduced in retail stores (it will debut in early March), Olympus has already announced it will carry a $399 price tag when it shows up. While that s a pretty petty more than similar point-and-shoot cameras with the same resolution, the Olympus underwater capability alone justifies the expense if you plan on using it, since standalone enclosures can run over $150 easily. So, whether you re a klutz or a born risk taker, you may want to further investigate the Stylus 1030 SW to save yourself from another painful camera casualty.
Olympus Stylus 1030 SW Features:-
* Exciting shots in and by the pool and water as waterproof to 10m*
* Take it anywhere, anytime as shockproof up to 2.0m**
* Crushproof 100kg***
* 10.1 Mega pixels to make poster-size prints
* 3.6x wide optical zoom (28-102mm for stunning close-ups

Waterproof Advantage Of Dive Cameras Used Topside
It was only by chance I discovered this optimum solution for solving the problem of always having to worry about keeping my digital camera protected from both the elements, and too much knocking around.
I'd been wanting a replacement for my dive camera and in the process of researching alternatives, came across this new generation of underwater cameras that work equally well out of the water. Even better is that they're still compact and lightweight enough to make sense as a replacement for my land use only digital camera.
Some of the most popular underwater digital cameras are:
SeaLife SL 320 Reef Master Mini Digital Camera
INTOVA INWD-IC500 5.0 Megapixel Digital Sports Camera with Waterproof Housing -130FT
Pentax Optio W60 Waterproof 10MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Optical Zoom (Ocean Blue)
So what's the point? Simply that I've gotten fed up with digital cameras that can't take a little sand or water. When do we generally take the most pictures? How about while on excursions to new places or while vacationing or on holiday. Where do we often do these things? Beaches, snow-capped mountains, rivers, hiking trails - the list goes on.

The majority of our photographs are taken in environments where there's a better than average chance that our camera will get wet, muddy, or banged about. Instead of worrying about splashes or a little rain, and dropping it in everything from sand to snow, wouldn't it be handy if these technological marvels were just a bit hardier?
Well a handful of dive camera manufacturers have apparently gotten the message because they've produced some rugged multi-purpose digital waterproof cameras. Better still is unlike their predecessors, they can be had at a much more reasonable price.

By predecessors, I mean those super-expensive, special-purpose underwater cameras with special housings that scuba divers and underwater photographers used. They are bulky and awkward to handle out of water and while one could remove the camera itself from the housing, that sort of defeats the purpose, as we're back to the original problem of having to take extra care with protecting the camera.
But these latest generation dive cameras are integrated units where the camera is made into a waterproof case comprised of impact resistant composite materials and armored with rubber at all the key places. Dropping them from several feet up leaves them unfazed.
They are lightweight (about a pound) and compact (less than 4 inches x 5 inches), and despite their small size, offer superb picture quality with ultra sharp, high-resolution images, even in low-light conditions such as those typically found underwater. Prices are comparable to a higher-end land use digital camera.
Of particular use are the settings that can be changed depending on whether you're shooting above or under the water. In "undersea" mode the various settings improve colors underwater by automatically adjusting shutter speeds and aperture settings. For "land" use they work like other land cameras allowing the user to adjust to conditions encountered above water. Other features include face detection and image stabilization.
Bottom line is eliminating the need for more than one camera. The same one that's perfect for scuba diving, now does double duty for hiking, mountain climbing, ocean kayaking, going to the beach, being out on the boat, and pretty much any other activity one might think of.
Even if you aren't a diver there are models made for snorkeling, and even though waterproof down to just about 10 feet or so, are less expensive. This is especially good news if your primary concern is finding a more rugged digital camera that won't give out after being splashed at the lake or left in the rain.

Underwater cameras are cameras which are designed for underwater photography or to be used in devices to protect them from damage caused by water pressure. Underwater cameras are available in different varieties and at different prices. Usually, underwater cameras are expensive. However, cheap underwater cameras can be searched for. One way to start a search is on the internet by typing “cheap underwater camera” in the search engine being used to get a several results and websites from where one can purchase a cheap underwater camera.
Companies like Nikon, Olympus and Canon manufacture cheap underwater cameras ranging between $ 40 and $ 1000. The cheapest underwater camera costing around $ 10 is the disposable underwater camera. Disposable underwater cameras are waterproof up to the depth of 6-9 meters. A person can take twenty to thirty pictures before the camera is disposed. The quality of images is however not very good. The cheap re-loadable underwater camera is priced between $ 25 and $ 50. This type of cheap underwater camera can be used multiple times and the film can be replaced. The quality of photos is low and so they can be used for simple purposes only. The cheap re-loadable cameras are waterproof up to a depth of 30 meters.

The cheap low end digital underwater camera is priced at about $100. This cheap digital camera is waterproof up to a depth of 5 meters. It provides better quality of images and can be used in rough weather.
